My husband bought the Zi6 for Christmas. I took about 45 seconds’ worth of video (about 3 separate short snippets) and the joystick stopped working (I would click on it but it would not record). I returned if for another one, and it did EXACTLY THE SAME THING: worked for 5 minutes and then the joystick stopped responding. The rest of the buttons worked, so I could review my three snippets of video, but could no longer record. I have a Kodak still camera with a joystick, and have never had a problem with it, so I know I’m not being too rough with the joystick. I can only conclude it’s a design defect. VERY DISAPPOINTING!!! I’m returning my second one for a refund, and am now using my daughter’s Flip video camera instead.

I should have tried this out when I bought it as it’s too late to send it back to QVC. The camera is good, lightweight but sturdy, easy to use, resolution and sound is good. I spent the last two days taping myself to meet a submission deadline and now I’ll miss out on the opportunity due to the unusable software. I’m fairly savvy but there are few edit options, no instruction or video tutorial and definitely no help from arcsoft. When I tried to cut out some dead footage the sound went out of synch. Also, the files are only usable to arcsoft, Windows Movie Maker cannot access them or any other program….so I’m outtaluck on meeting the deadline…all due to this software which, if you look online, has many detractors.

  • I had almost made up my mind to get a FlipMino HD and at the last second, I saw this comparison. After seeing some videos and pictures shot with both, I concluded that the Kodak Zi6 had better lighting, white balance, picture quality and sound quality. I was surprised to find it was also much cheaper than the $250+ model FlipMino HD I was considering. Also, the FlipMino HD only took moving videos, not stills. This camcorder takes still photos as well as three different versions of video, and it comes with a focus switch to get high quality “super close-ups” too.

After it arrived, I put the batteries in and turned it on. Turning it on gave me only a slight pause. I was expecting it to be a toggle for on or off, but you actually slide the button over and hold it for a few seconds to turn it on, and do the same to turn it off. From there, the entire interface is easy to figure out without needing any kind of manual. It’s very intuitive.

I love how compact it is. It makes it very portable. At the same time, the buttons don’t suffer the micro-mania that has been sweeping technology over the last few years. The buttons are still very easy to push and finagle as you need to despite the camcorder’s small size. Picture and sound quality are awesome, and simple push of a button on the front opens up a USB stick to port photos and videos right over to your computer within just seconds. When you’re done, you just flip it back down and it resumes its streamline design. It’s brilliant!

    Things to consider:

    - The power button is not a toggle.

    - The batteries that came with the camcorder are rechargeable and do come with a recharger, but mine only came charged about 10% so they did not last very long initially.

    - You will need more memory if you plan on taking much video. It comes with only 128 megabytes, but can extend up to 32 gigabytes. I found 8 gigabytes was more than enough for my own needs.

    - The USB stick goes directly from the camera to the computer, meaning there is no cable in between the two, which can be tricky for certain computers. Make sure it’s supported properly and not just hanging from the computer via the USB stick or it could loosen the either of the USB jacks.

    - It includes cables to connect directly to your TV so you can watch your videos straight from the camcorder on your television.

    - One mode of video is VGA (or “web-ready”) which means you don’t have to spend time compressing it to share on the web; it’s already ready.

    - It includes video editing software.

Overall, I am very, very pleased with this camcorder, especially at this price!

The camera is cute and compact yet lacks features. It’s zoom strength leaves much to be desired, you can only film someone who is around 5′ away from you and it doesn’t zoom out enough to get full bodies captured clearly. Overall I would have saved my money and bought a ‘real’ handheld camera. The major feature they endorse is upload straight to utube and the inboard usb (which did not work on mine) and I still had to save from the sd card. If you just want a camera that can sit in your purse than it’s ok other than that put the money towards something with more zoom power and better picture quality. Picture actually lagged behind and has ‘trails’ when the subject is moving in the video.

A lot of good reasons to choose the Kodak over the competition. Price, build quality is very high, expandable memory, excellent video quality and though not made in America, Kodak is still an American company that employs thousands of American people. You can’t go wrong choosing the Kodak Zi6. Kodak Zi6 Pocket HD Camcorder (Pink)
